Library emerges!

After much repair, testing and inspection of the roof, the polythene sheets shrouding the library shelves have been "furled" but not entirely removed. Users are invited to rediscover the books!

Vigilance would be appreciated, just in case...

New "Universal Catalogue"

Users of Newton, the catalogue of the University's libraries, will note that the option to search the Universal Catalogue has disappeared from the screen.

To search all libraries, you should now use http://search.lib.cam.ac.uk/

This is LibrarySearch (see the blue box on the Newton home page), which not only covers the stock of all libraries, but also allows you to include periodical articles in the same search.

All Cambridge Undergrads may borrow from UL

With effect from 1st October, Cambridge undergraduates of all years may borrow 5 items, on a loan period of 2 weeks, from the University Library (UL):

New undergraduates should find that their University ID cards are automatically registered at the UL.

Off campus access bookmarklet

If you experience difficulties with off-campus access to journal articles, especially if you often arrive at useful articles by independent searching, you might like to try the UL's bookmarklet. It allows you to re-load any web page through the correct proxy server, and may use a Raven login page to take you to the article full text. More details can be found here.

New RSC Search Platform

Ceramic Engineering and Science Proceedings

The library's print-only subscription to CESP covers the years 1982 - 1991, in closed access, and 1992 - present on the open shelves. Historically it has been catalogued in various ways, and it may not always be clear from Newton, whether we have a volume. If you need a paper from the series, please ask.

After some problems early this morning, the Newton catalogue is live again. Remember to check that you are using the correct database in Newton, for the library or libraries you wish to search.

Computer systems restored / updated

The staff software for our library systems is working normally again, with the exception of the Newton public catalogue, which is still in backup mode. Do contact me if you need help finding stuff.
The help screens on the self-issue machine outside the office have been updated to be more helpful.

MSM Library / Moore Library

Plans moved on somewhat this morning for the future transfer of some of our stock to the Betty and Gordon Moore Library, before our move to more restricted space in the new West Cambridge building.

Holds and recalls

During the vacation, holds and recalls via the Newton catalogue are turned off for this library, to avoid recalling books borrowed by undergraduates. If you need a book which is currently on loan, please contact the library by e-mail.
